Breeder: ‘Rubin’ is today the main Bulgarian variety for red wines

Scientists from the Institute of Vine and Wine in Pleven are already showing good results in the creation of grape varieties resistant to drought

Selection of the vine It is one of the main areas in which it works. The Institute of Vine and Wine in Pleven (IWV).Where are the efforts of scientists in the development of varieties, tells Agri.BG Assoc. Ilian Simeonov from the Variety and Variety Maintenance Department.

"The Institute of Vine and Wine in Pleven in its 120-year history has created and approved by the institutions over 45 varieties, 10 branches and 2 rootstocks, so we already have enough extensive experience in this direction.

In the beginning, the selection was mainly aimed at creating dessert varieties, to help the Bolgar variety, as it was the only dessert variety widely distributed in the country and at the same time to create wine varieties in the 1960s in order to have sufficient varietal resources for wine production. To our pride, a wide range of varieties have been created, which are still relevant to this group today. I will only mention ’Bolgar Super Rank’, ‘Pleven’, ‘Buket’, ‘Rubin’ of the wine grape varieties’.

However, following the democratic changes, the rhythm of vine selection was disrupted when the free importation of vine propagating material from different countries across Europe began. This led to a reduction in the new Bulgarian varieties, but a new direction was launched in the ILV-Pleven: selection of resistant varieties of various stressors

‘Years ago, when the first varieties were created, there was some difficulty in imposing them, but over time, people adopted them and varieties such as “Storgozia” and “Misket Kailashki” are now widespread in practice. This is now a priority direction in the work at the Institute of Vine and Wine in Pleven. Prior to 2009, some new varieties – Kailashki Rubin, Trapezitsa, red wine varieties and Pleven dew – were approved as white varieties, with increased resistance to low winter temperatures and fungal diseases. As well as the varieties "Garant", "Pleven favorite", which are dessert varieties, which are also with increased resistance, enjoy a great interest from people", commented Assoc. Ilian Simeonov.

Today from these resistant varieties the most planting material is produced by the specialists of the institute and it is to them that the greatest interest of the grape producers in the country is directed.

According to Assoc. Simeonov such varieties are suitable for ecologically clean production, which is increasingly entering the practice of winegrowers.
"In view of the growing tendency for less use of pesticides in the cultivation of vines, these are varieties that allow such a practice and people are looking for them first from an economic point of view, second from a health point of view", Assoc. Ilian Simeonov.

In view of climate change, breeders' eyes are now focused on the development of vine varieties resistant on land.Experts have already made progress, but the creation of an established variety takes more time.

“We are also continuing to work on the creation of classic dessert varieties in order to expand the range of dessert products we offer. Last year, we established three new varieties – Nayden, Miro and Joanna. Two of them are the product of classical hybridization, do not have resistance, but are extremely attractive as grapes, "said the IVV breeder.

However, the return to traditional Bulgarian varieties has been intensifying in recent years. Varieties such as Pleven, Misket Plevenski and Dream are still the most sought after by farmers, despite their long history.

According to the expert’s estimates, ‘Storgozia’, ‘Misket Kailashki’ and the new varieties are sought from the resistant wine varieties, as they are adapted to our conditions. A similar revival is observed in the wine variety ’Rubin"

"In recent years, there has been a very high interest in the Rubin variety, which is a selection of the institute. He is currently experiencing a new revival, as this is a variety that was created in the 60s, it was widely distributed in Bulgaria. After the introduction of the wide range of introduced varieties, it slowly disappeared, even before it was lost. To our delight, 10-15 years ago, especially in southern Bulgaria, some experiments were made with him and he rose again there under these conditions, and now there is no wine house or cellar that does not have in its portfolio wines of the Rubin variety or a blend with the Rubin variety, which also win medals at exhibitions, which we enjoy because it was a forgotten variety, and now it is the main Bulgarian variety for red wines."" further said Assoc. Ilian Simeonov.
