The region around Pleven combines millennial traditions in viticulture and winemaking with modern wine experiences. Many historical artifacts such as the Valchitran Gold Treasure and the Bohot Silver Field, displayed at the Pleven Regional Museum of History (link to the museum https://rim-pleven.com ), testify to this rich past.
It is also home to one of the oldest agricultural schools in the country: the Vocational School of Vine and Wine, founded in 1890. At that time, the first French-style winery in the country was opened at the school, keeping one of the oldest wine collections in Bulgaria. Today the building is a cultural monument and is managed by ILV-Pleven.
Experienced wine cellar opened in 1890.
One of the activities of ILV-Pleven is to actively support the development and promotion of wine tourism in Bulgaria. In 2022, the IVV-Pleven, together with partners, registered “Winemaking – traditional production and use in the Pleven region" c the National Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Bulgaria.
In August 2024, the Municipality of Pleven, together with the Institute and RHM-Pleven, held the first edition of the festival ‘Time for wine" combining local wines, farm delicacies and a cultural programme. The slogan of the festival is: ‘Pleven – where wine tells stories and food complements them’
